Tenerife - Costa Adeje Gran Hotel Review

The view from a room at the back of the hotel - overlooking the mountains

Costa Adeje Gran is a massive 5-star hotel in the Costa Adeje area of Tenerife. It is not the first hotel we tried in Costa Adeje, but so far it's our favourite one and the one we are very likely to return to for our next Tenerife vacation.

You enter though an enormous lobby, so from the first moment there is the wow effect. There is a bar to one side and comfy seating areas to another side, which are great for chilling with a book should you feel so inclined.

The rooms are also spacious and have a big bathroom as well as a good sized flat screen TV. What I've noticed is that a lot of travel agency websites seem to have room and grounds photos from 20 years ago, so do check the hotel website directly to get an impression of what the rooms look like. Our room (439) was on the fourth floor and facing the back, with a stunning view of the mountains. There was also free wifi you could use in the room and well as throughout the hotel.

Even though the hotel grounds are massive, they do a great job of taking care of them. Everything was spotlessly clean, and we haven't seen a single cockroach (the plague of most Tenerife main resort hotels, even the 4-5 star ones). The pool area is large and also has a bar with tables, so you can easily get drinks to consume at your lounger or enjoy the sun sitting at a table instead of using the loungers. You can change the towels every day if you want. There is another pool and bar on the roof, which is smaller and has gorgeous views in all directions. Again, from the outdated photos online you may think loungers are the cheap plastic ones, when in reality they are nice rattan ones.

The nearest beach is a short and pleasant stroll away. The Costa Adeje area is generally nice to walk around as it's more upmarket and quieter than the neighbouring Playa de Las Americas. Plaza del Duque shopping centre is on the way to the beach and has great boutiques. There is also a big shopping centre with a cinema about 20-30 minutes walk from the hotel.

Finally, the food. We love the simplicity of being able to eat in a hotel, so go for all inclusive where possible, which was one of the reasons for choosing this hotel. This was probably the best all inclusive buffet we had anywhere, all things taken into account. The choice was massive - I am confident that everyone can find something they like - fresh vegetables, cheese selection, soup, different bread, seafood, chips & general hot food trays, fresh pasta station, pizza and meat/ fish station for dinner/lunch, pancake and egg stations for breakfast. The variety from day to day was also very good - there were what felt like different country days, like German day (sausages), French day (macarons) etc. The fresh pasta stand was amazing - you can choose what type of pasta you want and what sauce and veg you want added and they make it for you. For dinner, there was a choice of two different kinds of meat and two kinds of fish you could get from the hot plate. These were hit and miss, but we did have some amazing steak and lamb chops - you just have to try and see.

And then there were the desserts. For some reason, hotels often struggle to provide more than tasteless greasy cream cakes for desserts, so we usually just end up eating fruit. Costa Adeje Gran, however, had lots of delicious desserts to choose from - chocolate mousse and chocolate cake were two of our particular favourites - incredibly bad for the waistline, but incredibly good for the the palate! :) We left the hotel a few kilos heavier...

We were sad to leave and can't wait to return!
