If you like cats like I do, then Playa Blanca is the perfect place to spend your time on Lanzarote. As you walk along the sea, you will encounter numerous cats, a lot of whom are extremely friendly and happy to chat with you and get some love in return. During the hotter hours of the day they are nowhere to be seen, but once it starts to get cooler, the cats come out to enjoy the fresh sea air and make some new friends. They certainly contributed to making my holiday fun!
The cats have 22 feeding stations managed by Freddy's Cathouse (you will see them clearly marked as such) - Freddy being a man who has lived on Lanzarote since 1994 and has dedicated his life to helping stray cats. Freddy takes care of neutering, feeding and building cat shelters and I am sure that it is through his good work that so many of the cats in Playa Blanca are trusting of humans. If you fall in love with one of the cats and want to take it back home with you, Freddy will also support you with the relocation process.
If you are as impressed as I am by the work of this kind man, there is a lot you can do to help - whether it's by buying some food or looking after a feeding station while you are in Playa Blanca or by donating some money if you're further away.
