Bruges - Portinari Hotel Review

Hotel Portinari Bruges review - view from room

The view from the room - top floor

Hotel Portinari is a small 4-star hotel, located on the edge of Bruges old town. If you are arriving by train, it is within a short and very easy walk from the train station (under 10 minutes I would say).

The location is brilliant - you are right by the main shopping streets, so you can delve into shopping and sightseeing straight away. There are also some restaurants right on your doorstep.

Hotel Portinari has been recently renovated (at some point  in 2016) and the rooms are very new and modern. Interestingly, googling the name finds you two websites of this hotel, neither of which has up-to-date photos of the rooms.

Our room was on the top floor and offered a breathtaking panoramic view of the churches and red tiled roofs of Bruges old town - magical at any time of day! There was a modern A/C control and the heating worked very well (important as visiting during cold Christmas weather).

The room was small, but functional, with an LCD TV, a kettle with two mugs and a safe (no charge to use). The bathroom was a very modern wetroom and was separated from the bedroom by a glass wall. which made the room feel more spacious. Though there was a blind that you could lower for privacy, there was no door, which may be a problem when needing to use the toilet. Design triumphed over convenience in the bathroom overall - the room would have really benefitted from a shelf by the sink (the round design made it precarious to keep things there, so had to keep toothbrushes etc on a narrow shelf over the toilet which is not ideal). It would also be good to have some sort of division from the shower, as the floor got wet all the way to the toilet.

Those are the bits that lost the hotel a star, but on the whole, if you can live with the flaws of the bathroom design, it's a great place to stay and a very affordable one as well.
