Bedfordshire - Wyboston Lakes Hotel & Spa (now renamed to The Waterfront Hotel) Review

Wyboston Lakes Hotel Room (Oceania)
Wyboston Lakes (since this review was written, it has been rebranded as The Waterfront Hotel) is a 4-star hotel, spa and golf complex located by a lake and by the river Ouse right on the border between Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

It is easily accessible by car from the A1 and A428 or, alternatively, you can take the train to St Neots and either walk from the station (over an hour) or take a taxi.

The hotel has two buildings that house the rooms, Atlantis and Oceania. I stayed in an Oceania deluxe room with a comfy king sized bed. All the rooms were renovated in 2015/2016 and you can really tell - they are clean and modern, with everything in working order. The rooms at Wyboston Lakes / The Waterfront Hotel were kitted out with the modern consumer in mind - there are numerous sockets conveniently placed to charge your devices, including USB charging ports, so no more fiddling somewhere under the table or having to unplug the lamps.
If you didn't bring a tablet, that's not a problem - instead of the usual binder with the hotel info, Wyboston Lakes / The Waterfront Hotel has a tablet in every room, where you can find the information about the hotel and the surrounding area, order room service as well as browse the internet. There is also a 48'' smart TV with plenty of channels.

The bathroom is as modern as the rest of the room and includes Molton Brown toiletries and a rainfall shower. Apart from fluffy cotton towels, there were also bathrobes and slippers in the room that could be used for a visit to the spa.

The room only had one disadvantage - no aircon. Under normal weather conditions I suspect it wouldn't be a problem, but I was visiting on one of the hottest weekends of the year and it did get hot and sticky inside. They did put a big cold air fan in the room, which made it slighly better, but it was still too hot for my liking. But then again, how often does a hot weekend like that happen?

The hotel grounds are very nice - it's right on a small lake and you can sit around outside with a drink looking out onto the water or you can go and play golf (there is a golf course and a driving range), but it is not the nature that made me choose this hotel, it is the spa.

The Y spa at Wyboston Lakes / The Waterfront Hotel is definitely worth a visit. It has an outdoor hydrotherapy pool with various hydromassage stations. In good weather, it is surrounded by sun loungers and there is also a sofa area to relax in. Also outside is a little wooden house, which is the hottest sauna (85C and over).

In the main building of the spa, you will find two steam saunas (salty and normal and a 60C sauna called Softy (air humidity is higher than in a normal sauna). There are also experience showers and an ice wall. If you want to chill, there are several rooms just for that - once with water beds, another one with beds and relaxing music and finally a room with little pods to sit in.

Just like the rooms, the spa is clean, modern and well-maintained. Apart from the thermal spa, there is of course the option to get a massage facial etc;, which I didn't use this time.
There is also a restaurant on site, and my package included breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast had plenty of choice, both full English and continental. Lunch is a 2-course buffet meal - not too much choice, but enough and everything was tasty. Some full-day spa packages include lunch, so you can see people in bath robes in the restaurant. Finally, dinner was a 3-course meal, with quite a few starters and mains to choose from. Again, everything was tasty; however, staff did get confused a bit - forgot a part of the order, brought the bill for the whole meal rather than just the drinks, even though the food was included in the package. They were very friendly though and got everything sorted quickly.

The staff in the remainder of the hotel were also very friendly and helpful and contributed to the pleasant stay.

I had a great time at Wyboston Lakes / The Waterfront Hotel and would happily recommend it for a spa break.
